Welcome to our Quick Reads format. Each week we share selected news bites relevant to family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa.
New article published looks at communicating research using Kaupapa Māori practices
A new article from Whakauae Research has been published: Reclaiming the Threads: Re-Narrating Māori Stories in New Spaces (2025). It explores how translation of Māori research data into innovative formats and spaces can enhance communication and broaden its uptake, including with Māori audiences. The article uses as a case study the research project, Tō Mātou Kāinga tō Mātou Ūkaipō, and Māori creative students’ collaborative and novel approaches to communicating research findings. New report on early intervention in family and gender-based violence
Safe and Equal have published Early intervention in family and gender-based violence: Scoping paper (2025), which examines early intervention programmes in Victoria, Australia and how they can be supported to grow and develop. It defines early intervention as initiatives designed to stop abuse from escalating and shift attitudes and behaviours to minimise immediate and long-term risk.
New Ministry of Justice trends and data tables
Te Tāhū o te Ture| Ministry of Justice has released updated data tables for the financial year ending 31 June 2025. Related resources include:
- Key trends for people with finalised charges in court, including children and young people in and out of Youth Court
- Downloadable data tables for sexual offences, family violence offences, protection order applications, and family violence programmes
- A new category for Strangulation/suffocation offences, resulting from the revised Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification (v2.0.0)

2025 Gender Attitude Survey results released
The National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) has released the results of the Aotearoa New Zealand Gender Attitudes Survey 2025, which is the fifth of its kind undertaken by NCWNZ and Rangahau Aotearoa Research New Zealand. It asks the following key questions:
- What importance do New Zealanders place on gender equality
- How is this reflected in their opinions about the genders
- How well are we doing in terms of achieving gender equality.
