Welcome to our Quick Reads format. Each week we share selected news bites relevant to family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa.

New report released on digital violent extremism

Te Tari Taiwhenua | Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) have released their 2024 Transperancy Report: Digital Violent Extremism (2025), which provides an overview of terrorist and violent extremist content (TVEC) online in Aotearoa. It also examines crisis response activities and their prevention and education work. For more, see DIA media release, Referrals of terrorist and violent extremist content increased by 10 percent in 2024.

Netsafety Week 2025: resources on technology facilitated violence and online safety

Netsafe are running their annual Netsafety Week from 28 July to 1 August 2025. This year’s theme is “Power in Partnerships” and showcases Netsafe’s collaborations. The week’s lineup includes:

  • Monday 28 July 2025: Release of Netsafe’s resource in collaboration with Women’s Refuge, Shine, and the Light Project, Together on technology-facilitated coercive control (TFCC). It will help people recognise, understand, and seek support for TFCC and is aimed at those experiencing this abuse and their support people.
  • 12pm Monday 28 July 2025: Webinar on AI and Online Safety run by Netsafe and the AI Asia Pacific Institute, which will share the latest research, emerging risks and opportunities, and digital resilience strategies in an evolving tech landscape.
  • 1pm Wednesday 20 July 2025: Webinar on Reflections on International Indigenous Health Collaborations where Netsafe CEO Brent Carey and Netsafe Poutaki Mātauranga Māori Amokura Panaho reflect on the recent INIHKD RIEL global Indigenous health conference.
