Welcome to our Quick Reads format. Each week we share selected news bites relevant to family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa.
New oversight report on outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi Māori and their whānau in the Oranga Tamariki system
Independent Children’s Monitor | Aroturuki Tamariki has published Outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi Māori and their whānau in the oranga tamariki system 2023/24 (2025). Multiple versions of the report are available as well as links to media releases from Oranga Tamariki and the Police. This inaugural annual report is a requirement under the Oversight of the Oranga Tamariki System Act. It covers:
- outcome indicators for tamariki and rangatahi Māori currently involved in the oranga tamariki system
- outcome indicators for Māori adults aged 27–30 who were involved in the system as children
- how Oranga Tamariki works with whānau Māori, including through its strategic partnerships
- reports of concern, family group conferences and youth justice intervention.

New report from Oranga Tamariki: Engaging victims in youth justice family group conferences (FGCs)
Oranga Tamariki have released a new report, Engaging victims in youth justice FGCs: a 2-site analysis of what works (2025), which explores the FGC process. It focuses on the experiences of victims of youth crime and key stakeholders including youth justice coordinators, social workers, and Police youth aid officers. The research aims to:
- understand the barriers victims may face to engage
- identify ideal ways and the right time to engage victims early
- recommend options to improve victim engagement, participation, and satisfaction
- offer insight into the challenges of improving such processes and create valuable data.
Submissions still open for the Regulatory Standards Bill, closing 23 June 2025
The Chair of the Finance and Expenditure Committee is calling for submissions on the Regulatory Standards Bill. The Bill would have wide-reaching effects on all future and existing legislation and the legislature itself. Several resources are available to assist people in making submissions:
- Submission builder to assist individuals and groups to create personalised submissions, created by Hāpai Te Hauora.

Submissions are due by 1pm, Monday 23 June 2025.
Evidence brief on the role of men’s behaviour change programmes in addressing men’s use of violence
A new evidence brief has been published by ANROWS, The role of men's behaviour change programs in addressing men's use of domestic, family and sexual violence: an evidence brief (2025). This evidence brief summarises literature on men’s behaviour change programmes (MBCPs) and helps build a shared understanding of their role in addressing domestic, family and sexual violence in Australia. To this end, the following questions were considered:
- What is an MBCP?
- What can we expect it to do?
- When do MBCPs work and in what context?
- What can we do better?
New reports on women in prisons in Western Australia
Two related reports have been released providing a profile of women in prison in Western Australia: Profile of Women in Western Australian Prisons 2022/23. Quantitative Report. (unpublished – 2024); and, Profile of Women in Western Australian Prisons 2022/23. Qualitative Report. (unpublished – 2024).
